Self-assertive in a rude, noisy, or overbearing way. Yep, you guessed it! I visited Brash Brewing for the May installment of Craft Chronicles.
Hidden behind some townhomes off of Crosstimbers/43rd, it could be easy to miss, but you would do yourself a disservice if you didn’t stop in. With metal music playing on the jukebox and an awesome selection of vintage arcade games spread around the edges of the large open warehouse, I rolled in and plopped down at a picnic table adorned with “artwork” that some guests must have spent lots of time on. There is absolutely nothing fancy about the establishment and that’s one of the things that seems to give it even more charm. Another definition for the word brash is strong, energetic, or irreverent. This definition describes the flavors that this brewery proudly injects into each of its offerings. You’ll find dank, bitter, bold, clean and assertive are very recurrent themes to each of their beers.
Along with the boldness of flavor you’ll find boldness in beer names: Vulgar Display of Power and Hammer Smashed Face to name a couple. I made my way up to the bar and selected several pints because you gotta try them all. On tap was EZ7 (Pale), Fancy Sauce (IPA), Pussywagon (IPA), Cortado (Coffee Stout) and Cali Green (IPA). Did I mention they brew mostly IPAs and big stouts? Brash Brewing also has several guest taps that rotate regularly with a great assortment of other beer styles.
On this day, I gravitated towards the EZ7, a blend of styles really. It isn’t a pale ale because the IBUs are too high and it isn’t an IPA because the alcohol is too low at around 5% ABV. So we will just call it a pale for now. The EZ7 had a great white foamy head that clung to the sides of the glass creating a beautiful lacing pattern. The aromatics were off the charts with tons of grapefruit, citrus and pine with just enough dankness to make you think it was a West Coast IPA. The first swig followed through with an overload of hop flavor, but somehow without being overbearing. It had a very nice clean bitterness followed by a dry finish. Truly a great all around beer.
Basically, you need to stop what you are doing and head to Brash. There’s no other brewery quite like it, and it’s right in your backyard.
